Description

Our volunteer advocates come from all walks of life and educational backgrounds.  They have an empathetic and non-judgmental attitude and the ability to:

  • Offer emotional support to victims and survivors of sexual assault by staffing a 24-hour help and support line.
  • Provide resources and referrals to people who call the support line callers as needed.
  • Assist with community health/information fairs as needed.
  • Take at least two help & support line shifts each month.
  • Be trained to better serve victims, families, and friends who may call the support line.
  • Commit to at least one year of volunteer service.

Advocate Requirements

  • Take 2 help/support lines twice a month (minimum).

  • Shifts: 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. or 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.​

  • 18 years or older

  • Complete application/interview (application provided in PDF form on the top of page).

  • Must pass a criminal background check

  • Must complete the training provided to you, as an advocate. 

 

You will be able to teach advocacy skills, educate individuals about resources, empower people, and provide various forms of support to survivors. ​​

 

You will NOT have to provide transportation or private cell phone numbers to callers/survivors on the support/helpline; you ONLY have to be available via your phone at all times during your shift. 

What We Look for in an  Advocate 

  • Strong compassion and a desire to connect with and help others.
  • Reliability and dependability.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with diverse populations.
  • Sound judgment and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to respect and maintain strict client confidentiality and adhere to all agency standards and policies.
  • Ability to refrain from giving advice and projecting personal views.
  • Good self-care and the ability to seek out support from others.
