Make a lasting impact on a student’s academic journey by serving as an After-School Homework Assistant and Tutor. You will work directly with elementary school students to build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and foster a lifelong love for learning in a supportive, positive environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Help students complete daily homework assignments across core subjects (Math, Science, Reading, and Social Studies) while ensuring they understand underlying concepts rather than just finding the correct answers.
- Assist students with reading comprehension, foundational math, and writing to help bridge learning gaps and boost classroom performance.
- Teach foundational organizational habits, effective time management, test-preparation strategies, and note-taking techniques to promote independent learning.
- Serve as a positive role model by actively listening, offering constructive feedback, celebrating academic wins, and helping students cultivate a growth mindset.
- Assist program staff with organizing educational games, setting up learning stations, and maintaining a focused, safe, and productive study space.
Volunteers will need to show up by 3:00 p.m. to the Ben McNair Recreation Center located at 300 North 12th Avenue. Upon arrival volunteers will be greeted by a member of the HPAL staff for a brief orientation and will then be directed to the tutoring room.
