What We Do
The Burrow Nature Center operates a 111-acre living laboratory south of Hattiesburg dedicated to ecological restoration, community resilience, and hands-on education. Our core activities include:
Conservation: We are actively restoring longleaf pine savanna and sandhill habitats for our federally protected animal populations. Our land management combines prescribed fire, mechanical thinning, and conservation grazing with goats.
The Forest School: Launched in 2020, our youth program provides place-based, experiential outdoor education.
Piney Woods Resilience Fellowship: This workforce development initiative trains young adults and landowners in the resilient land management. Participants gain practical skills in green infrastructure (including off-grid solar, rainwater management, and sawmilling), prescribed fire, regenerative agro-forestry, and more.
Community & Landowner Outreach: We serve as a demonstration site, offering a collaborative space for university field research, volunteer opportunities, and practical models to integrate ecological health with sustainable livelihoods.
