Opportunities From: The University of Southern Mississippi

Our kennel building is getting a much-needed update, and we need your help to make it happen! 

Greater Good Charities is coming to Southern Pines to complete an interior & exterior renovation of the existing kennel building, to include flooring, paint, kennels, and general repairs. Renovations will be completed in two phases to allow for the animals to remain on-site and for life-saving operations to continue.

Volunteers will assist with the following tasks:

Team Toe Beans is a team of volunteers that cleans and cares for our adoptable cats and kittens at PetSmart in Hattiesburg! Our partnership with PetSmart provides hundreds of animals the opportunity to find loving families of their own. In 2024, we had a whopping 683 adoptions at PetSmart which made up over 1/3 of our total adoptions for the year!   
Taking care of the adoptable kitties through Team Toe Beans is an easy way to make a huge difference in the lives of cats in our community while racking up volunteer hours. There are two available shifts each day -- one in the morning and one in the evening -- which makes it easy to find something that fits with your schedule.

With the summer sun on full blast, our lawn is growing faster than our pups' tails can wag. We’re in need of a volunteer or lawn care service to help keep our grounds trimmed, so our dogs can enjoy their daily walks in comfort.

We are looking for a few volunteers who would be willing to come weekly, or every other week, to help us with our lawn care needs and who could help us keep the shelter greenery looking trim, tidy, and more welcoming. Specifically we are looking for volunteers who will help us with:

Mowing the grass - All grassy areas around office and kennel buildings, the grassy strip in the front of the parking lot, and the area outside of the front shelter gateWeed whacking - All playpens need to be weedwhacked, areas around flowerbeds and next to fencingWeeding - All flower beds & planter pots need a little TLC to get the weeds under control

The shelter has a gas push mower and a weed whacker available, but you are also welcome to bring any lawn care equipment of your own that might make the job a bit easier!

​There is no more personal and impactful way to help animals than by becoming a foster parent, and Southern Pines has a variety of foster opportunities to help save more lives than ever before! From opening your home to an underage puppy or kitten, to becoming an Adoption Ambassador -- there are so many ways to foster and every one means the world to an animal in need. Fosters play a vital role in the life of their foster animals and are a critical component to the success of the Southern Pines Animal Shelter mission as a whole. Simply put, fosters help save lives.

Southern Pines provides all of the supplies and medical care for our foster animals as well as ongoing training and support for all fosters. Fosters receive 1-3 volunteer hours per animal per day depending on the number of animals fostered and the type of care they require.

Searching for an exciting way to volunteer? Look no further! We’re in great need of a helping hand to support our staff at our offsite events. From our weekend adoption events at PetSmart, to giveback nights and donation drives, to festivals and other special events, your enthusiasm and passion to help pets in need will help to make our offsite events an even bigger success.

You'll get to help set up our booth, get the pets all settled into their enclosures, and arrange merch and signage. Plus you'll get to chat with prospective adopters and shower our pets with love and scritches. But the very best part? Helping pets find loving homes and being a part of the process of bringing people and pets together.
