The annual MS Science Olympiad state tournament will be held on Friday, March 27, and volunteers are needed!

The Mississippi Science Olympiad state tournament is coming soon! Approximately 300 junior high and high school students, teachers, and parents are coming to the USM campus on Friday, March 27.

Students will compete in a variety of events, from Anatomy to Electric Vehicle and Write It Do It. Events will be held mostly in the science buildings (Walker, JST, TEC), but also in the Union and the Payne Center.  

Help will be needed in several ways, all day long, from pointing students to correct buildings, to helping set up events, using a stop watch, grading papers, or whatever the event supervisors need.

Volunteering for events like the MSO look great on your résumé, can help you earn service learning credits, and you’ll probably have fun while you’re there!

STEM Saturdays are free events where K-12 attendees will explore a specific STEM topic in a team setting. Examples of these topics include Force & Motion, Wind Energy, and Heart & Lungs. Hawkins Elementary are looking for students to volunteer at a local elementary school – Hawkins Elementary School located at 526 Forrest Street. 

Tasks include reading to students, helping in the classroom, creating materials for the classroom, sorting library books, creating bulletin boards and other school related activities.   

*Task could include working with children or not working directly with children.   

*Hours are between 8am-2:30pm.  

During the school year, there will be special activities that will be additional times to volunteer such Read Across America Day, Field Day and other school wide activities.

Assist Youth Counselor with daily scheduled activities, supervision, and safety of participants. Report any emergencies immediately. Document all accidents witnessed of a youth and render first aid where needed. Be aware of all CPR certified staff in case of an emergency as well as the location of all emergency kits.

Youth may be transported on Agency vehicle to other locations for off site activities, you will be expected to assist while offsite just as if you are still onsite.

Attire: Dress comfortable/Athletic wear is permitted but  please refrain from arriving in sleepwear, bonnets, extremely short or tight shorts/skirts/skorts, crop tops or see through attire. No houseshoes/open toe slides. Closed toe shoes are preferred( Crocs should be in sports mode; sandals with a heel strap) Must be able to attend to the roles and responsibilties provided without a safety liability.

Present an pre-approved group activity (game, hands on project, informative presentation, entertainment,etc.) to an assigned group of youth participants.

Youth participants ages will range from grades PK-12(ages 4-17). Approximately 20students per group. Up to 80 participants.

S.T.E.M. Saturday is a free program that takes place once a month at Town Square Park or Midtown Green. This program exposes children to the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Volunteering for this program involves setting up tables, assisting with the STEM activity/craft, and breaking down tables/materials at the end of the event.

This position is a fun and intensive opportunity designed for those interested in the veterinary field to get hands-on experience with our high volume spay/neuter surgery team or wellness team. Due to the nature of this position, we have an interview process and ask for a commitment of one full day a week for one semester.  All training will be provided.

Clerical Assistant:

-Ensure that each Seniors/proxy sign the dated recipient form for each approved  box at the time of pick-up. 

Laborer:

(Must be able to lift 20lbs comfortably to place onto a rolling carts and/or to carry it for up to 100ft. to the recipients' vehicle)

-Assist with the loading & unloading of approx 70+ food boxes from the delivery truck to carts/dolly and place in distribution zone.

-Assist Senior food box recipients with loading of each box into vehicle. (Use of rolling cart is available)

The free After School Art Class in downtown Hattiesburg is an opportunity for kids ages 6 to 11 to explore different mediums and creative outlets. Volunteering for this program involves helping the teacher set up the classroom, helping children with the art activities, and helping organize/clean the classroom.

Support local teens as they take the stage! This free program gives students the chance to explore performance through acting, improv, storytelling, and stage presence. Volunteers will help with setup, cleanup, and guiding teens during rehearsals and activities in a positive, encouraging environment. No theater experience required, just bring your energy and a willingness to cheer on young performers as they build confidence and creativity.

Help bring creativity and expression to the community! This free art and acting program for homeschool students gives kids the chance to explore different mediums such as drawing, painting, collage, and the opportunity to explore the performing arts. Volunteers will assist with setup, cleanup, and guiding children through hands-on activities in a fun, supportive environment. No art or theatre background required -- just a willingness to help kids learn, create, and express themselves.

Bellevue Assisted Living has Beauty Day for their female residents every Tuesday from 9:30-12:00 (noon). Though it may seem mundane to most, this activity is one of the highlights of their week. Not only do they have their nails done, they have the opportunity to have one on one fellowship with friends! This is so important to their well being!

DREAM of Hattiesburg is looking for individuals to volunteer for our tutoring program. Tutors will work with 1st-8th graders on all subjects needed. Tutors will be responsible for motivating students to complete homework and reading. It will be every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 3 pm-5:00 pm. If you are interested in working with children in the education field or need service hours, we would be glad to have you. Meals on Wheels is a cooperative effort between CSI, local churches, and special groups to provide hot nutritious noon meals to their local church members and their friends, who are homebound and cannot provide for themselves.  We have several routes that our volunteers run Monday-Friday.  Volunteers will pick up meals from our office at 301 E 2nd St Hattiesburg, MS 39401 between 10:30-11:00.  Most of our routes have between 8-15 addresses and take approximately 1 hour for delivery.

This serves as a catch-all for the general volunteer hours offered by the community. If it is not represented by another event here, then most efforts will fall into this category. These are typically smaller clean-ups, smaller campus-projects, or set-ups.

Why volunteer?

Many students struggle to access period products when they need them most (as much as 20% or more from some national data). Lack of access to period products affects people’s sense of dignity, impacts their attendance and participation in classes, and can pose serious risks to their physical and mental health.  You can help change that.

Faculty and staff members of USM’s Committee on Services and Resources for Women (CSRW) began providing free period products in some bathrooms on campus in 2021 but often fall short of being able to provide all the products that are needed.

For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Hawkins Elementary School is looking for students to volunteer! Tasks include reading to students, helping in the classroom, creating materials for the classroom, sorting library books, creating bulletin boards, and other school related activities. 

- Task could include working with children or not working directly with children.

During the school year, there will also be special activities that will need volunteers such as truck or treat, celebration parades, and other school wide activities.

Visit with residents in the memory care unit at Bellevue Assisted Living to help them as they work on interactive, textile activities that keep their minds engaged - activities including folding towels, coloring books, or sorting buttons, sitting with them, talking with them, listening to them, taking a walk with them, engaging them in any way that might encourage them. Volunteers are needed for one hour at a time at any time during visiting hours. Volunteers who can come regularly are requested. 

This is not a hard job, but it is one that calls for time, love and patience. That said, it is the most rewarding job you will ever have!

Special Olympics College at USM unites college students and Special Olympics athletes as teammates, leaders, and friends. Local AARP Foundation volunteers provide free tax preparation services to the Laurel/Hattiesburg community during tax season (February through mid-April).  In addition to tax preparers, we also need volunteers throughout the year to assist with website maintenance (Tax-Aide Mississippi), configure Chromebooks and routers for secure operation, and to follow-up on voicemail requests for taxpayer appointments.  Some of these activities can be performed virtually.

For children involved in  Family Court cases, CASA Advocates provide information to the court to help decisions to be made more promptly and with greater information and sensitivity to the child's individual needs. CASA Advocates work for better outcomes, and provide children living out of their home with the knowledge that there is a community around them who cares.

CASA Advocates come from all backgrounds. Many work full-time. Some are students, working parents, or retired people. Flexibility, rather than employment status, is the critical factor. Most CASA Advocates work on a single case at a time. No legal expertise is required.

Volunteering as a CASA in Mississippi requires:

·       a valid driver’s license

·       a successful background check

·       30 hours of initial training.

Advocates must be 21 or older, undergo a background check and a personal interview, complete the training curriculum, and agree to abide by the policies and guidelines of the local CASA program they are volunteering with. Advocates must be patient, open-minded people who have good communication skills, a history of following through on commitments, and a willingness to accept guidance. Above all, they must care about children.

Advocates have a passion and commitment to this work that is invaluable to our most vulnerable victims. CASA volunteers make a life-changing difference for children and youth. Each volunteer is trained and supported by highly-qualified staff members.

With the summer sun on full blast, our lawn is growing faster than our pups' tails can wag. We’re in need of a volunteer or lawn care service to help keep our grounds trimmed, so our dogs can enjoy their daily walks in comfort.

Searching for an exciting way to volunteer? Look no further! We’re in great need of a helping hand to support our staff at our offsite events. From our weekend adoption events at PetSmart, to giveback nights and donation drives, to festivals and other special events, your enthusiasm and passion to help pets in need will help to make our offsite events an even bigger success.

You'll get to help set up our booth, get the pets all settled into their enclosures, and arrange merch and signage. Plus you'll get to chat with prospective adopters and shower our pets with love and scritches. But the very best part? Helping pets find loving homes and being a part of the process of bringing people and pets together.

Interested in getting involved in the community and "knocking some doors?" MS Votes will be hosting canvassing opportunities prior to the 2025 Primary and General Elections. Put on your walking shoes and join us every 2nd Thursday of the month.

Option: Choose a day that works for you and grab a friend. MS Votes will provide the necessary tools for you to canvass in your community. 

MS Votes will be hosting phone banking opportunities prior to the 2025 Primary and General Elections. Phone banking can be done from the comfort of your home or dorm room. You set your time and number of hours you will commit to. Training is provided.

If you are a lover of wildlife, this is the zoo for you! As a contact area volunteer, you will oversee guest/animal interactions and monitor animal behaviors at one of our two contact areas. This includes our Touch Africa Petting Zoo with Nigerian Dwarf goats and juvenile Alpine goats, as well as our Wallaby Walkabout with Red-Necked wallabies, Kunekune pigs, and emus. While you're stationed in these areas, you will have the opportunity to build enrichment for the animals, learn to use ethograms to record their behavior for keepers, and share fun facts about our wildlife with zoo guests.

This opportunity requires 12 hours of service monthly to make sure they are familiar with the animals in the contact areas. The zoo operates from 10AM-4PM Tuesday-Sunday and 2 or 4 hour shifts are offered. This is a flexible position and we are happy to work with your schedule!

This position requires docents to volunteer a minimum of 12 hours each month, for a minimum duration of 3 months. This is a very rewarding program that provides volunteers with unique experiences and the opportunity to gain experience in communication, education, and biology.

Docents are volunteer zoo educators! The Docent Program’s main goal is to help promote conservation and it is the primary theme in guest education. To achieve this goal, we use fun, educational activities to draw connections between Hattiesburg Zoo animals and Zoo guests. Docents represent the Zoo and support its promotion of conservation efforts. Docents can expect to engage with guests and educate them on the Zoo’s various animals, exhibits, biofacts, and conservation efforts. Docents will be provided with “docent boxes” with learning modules to educate guests on various science topics. While sharing information about animals, nature, and conservation, docents help increase guests’ knowledge and positive views of nature.

Disaster Action Teams provide 24-hour emergency response to local disasters, particularly house fires, ensuring that those affected have access to resources for basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing. Once expedited training requirements are met, a Disaster Action Team (DAT) Auxiliary Team Member can accompany a trained Disaster Action Team Member on the scene to provide comfort and recovery services to those impacted.

The purpose of this position is to provide leadership to Disaster Cycle Services workers in performing sheltering activities during preparedness, response, and recovery within a chapter or territory.

Sheltering provides congregate care including safe sleeping accommodations for people displaced due to disaster.
