Make a positive impact in local kids' lives by joining the Hattiesburg Police Athletic League (HPALs) as a Recreation Volunteer. This role is all about building community through play! You will help foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun by organizing and participating in dynamic indoor and outdoor recreational activities during our after-school program. This volunteer opportunity takes place Monday through Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m.

Key Responsibilities 

Volunteers will need to show up by 4 p.m. to the Ben McNair Recreation Center located at 300 North 12th Avenue. Upon arrival volunteers will be greeted by a member of the HPAL staff for a brief orientation and will then be directed to the gym.

Make a lasting impact on a student’s academic journey by serving as an After-School Homework Assistant and Tutor. You will work directly with elementary school students to build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and foster a lifelong love for learning in a supportive, positive environment.

The Hattiesburg Salvation Army is gearing up for this year's Angel Tree Program!

Volunteers are needed to interview families who are enrolling children in the program, which provides Christmas gifts for families in need.

Volunteers will interview families and populate the on-line application with answers given. It is especially helpful if volunteers can furnish their own laptop.

Live at Five is a free concert series that takes place in Town Square Park in the fall bringing together music, community, and culture. Volunteers for Live at Five assist with event setup and teardown, including pitching tents, assembling the stage, and managing trash removal. Roles also involve selling Coca-Cola products, supporting music acts and vendors, and providing general assistance to organizers as needed. 

Live at Five is held at Town Square Park located at 100 Main Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Upon arrival, you can park in the parking lot across from the park on Buschman Street, in the grass space across from the park on Bay Street, or any other available parking in Downtown Hattiesburg. This is a big event so parking can sometimes be limited depending on what time you arrive. Arriving early ensures access to closer parking. 

When you arrive, check in at the Live at Five tent with hosts Allison Neville and Kyle Baughman to get your volunteer assignment. Food and drinks will be available for purchase on-site.

To help kick off Campus Sustainability Month, we're looking for volunteers to help make our Recycling Olympics a success on October 1st! The City of Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation team is looking for volunteers to help support their fall youth softball program at Timberton Park. As a Youth Softball game volunteer, you will support coaches, players, umpires, and Parks and Recreation staff by maintaining a safe, lively, and organized game-day environment. You play a crucial role behind the scenes to ensure games run smoothly, schedules stay on track, and young athletes have a fun, safe competitive experience.

Volunteers will support game-day operations by assisting with field setup and equipment, helping run the concessions stand, maintaining clean dugouts and sidelines, and supporting player safety, all while gaining valuable experience in sports management and earning community service hours. To ensure safety and comfort while moving around the park, please wear comfortable athletic clothing and supportive, closed-toe shoes.

GROUP TRAINING: 8:00 AM (SHARP) - Volunteer training begins promptly at 8:00am. Led by a program leader, volunteers will be educated about who we are, what we do, and event expectations.

STATION REVIEW: 8:30 AM - During this time volunteers will remain positioned at their station to continue getting familiar with their activity. Instructional cards and the STEM NOLA/ STEM Global Action staff will be ready to help!

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION: 9:00 AM - Dr. Mackie or another member of our executive team will kick off the program with opening remarks before releasing the attendees to explore. 

PROGRAMING BEGINS: 9:15 AM - Students are released to learn and explore. Volunteers are encouraged to get students excited and engaged in the event activities.

BREAKDOWN & CLEAN UP: 12:00 PM - At the end of the program, each volunteer is responsible for packing up their own individual station. All materials will simply go in the tote that is stored underneath the table.

CHECK OUT: 1:00 PM - Please sign out, complete the volunteer survey and enjoy complimentary lunch.

Mini Makers is a program for parents and their children ages 5 and under. Kids make a take-home craft, get their energy out through dance and movement, and engage in child-led play allowing parents and children to have an opportunity to make new friends. Volunteering for Mini Makers involves supporting the setup of the class activity, assisting with the organization and cleanliness of the classroom, and providing assistance and encouragement to kids during the art activity. Mini Makers is held at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center located at 825 N Main Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Upon arrival, enter through the front of the building and the class will be in the room located in the classroom directly to the left. Please arrive at 8:45 a.m. When you arrive, Katie, our Arts Center manager, will be there to greet you! The class is from 9 to 10 a.m.

Live at Five is a free concert series where music, community, and local culture come together. Volunteering for Parks and Recreation at Live at Five involves setting up tent and tables, passing out craft or activity to children, assisting the children with their activity, ensuring the safety of the children, and breaking down tents and tables at the end of the event. Upon arrival, you can park in the parking lot across from the park on Buschman Street, in the grass space across from the park on Bay Street, or any other available parking in Downtown Hattiesburg. We need a few volunteers to help us unload our food truck every month on the first Thursday.

House of Blessings CDC Food Pantry will be hosting food box distribution every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday all year from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. at 2120 Oak Grove Road in Hattiesburg.

Volunteers are needed to help stock, fill food boxes, and carry to vehicles.

This incredible event brings our community together to raise awareness and show support for kids and adults living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in Mississippi. Donations raised at the Walk stay in Mississippi to support the programs and services of the DFM including emergency patient assistance, community and professional education as well as our kids programs including Camp Kandu! We need volunteers like YOU to help with set up, food prep, rest stops, registration, and more!

We are a nonprofit thrift store raising lifesaving funds for Southern Pines Animal Shelter and Healthy Pet Clinic! If you're looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community (or just a fun experience!), you've found the perfect place.

We currently have 2 locations available for volunteers: Our East shop (718 Bartur Street in Hattiesburg, MS) and our West shop (5296 Old Hwy 11 in Hattiesburg, MS). 

You can expect to sort clothing donations, organize and display items on our sales floor, and help with basic shop upkeep and light cleaning tasks.

Homeschool ceramics is a program where City of Hattiesburg homeschool students can enroll in a 2 week ceramics course where they learn to build with clay and create their own unique piece. Volunteering for Homeschool Ceramics involves supporting the instructor and setup of the activity, assisting with the organization and cleanliness of the studio, and providing assistance and encouragement to kids during the ceramics activity. Homeschool Ceramics is held at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center located at 825 N Main Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Upon arrival, enter through the front of the building and the take a right to go down the hallway. At the end of the hallway take a left and the ceramics studio will be directly on your left. Please arrive at 9:45 a.m. When you arrive one of the instructors will be there to greet you. The class is from 10 to 11 a.m.

Rhythm and Movement is a free Parks and Recreation program that introduces participants ages 8-15 to rhythm, movement, creativity, and collaboration through bucket drumming, body percussion, found-object percussion, and ensemble performance. Activities include rhythm games, movement activities, improvisation, group exercise, and more. Volunteering for this program involves setup of the activity, assisting with organization and cleanliness, and providing assistance and encouragement to kids during the activity. Rhythm and Movement is held at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center located at 825 N Main Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Parking is available on-site on the side of the building. Upon arrival, enter through the front of the building and one of the staff members will be there to greet you. Please arrive by 3:20 p.m. The program is from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The Art Market is a free event where attendees stroll through a variety of artwork, meet the artists, and discover one-of-a-kind pieces.  This event supports local talent while allowing customers to find that special something for friends, family, or themselves. Volunteering for Art Market involves setting up tents and tables, passing out crafts or activities to children and adults, assisting the children with their activity, ensuring the safety of the children, breaking down tents and tables at the end of the event, and assisting with other tasks as needed. The Art Market is held in the parking lot of the RSJ Community Arts Center (weather permitting) located at 825 N Main St., Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Upon arrival, you can park in the Fire Station parking lot across Main Street. When you arrive, look for a programmer in a shirt that says “Parks and Recreation” or walk up to the Parks & Recreation tent where one of the event hosts will direct you. Two hour shifts are available. Volunteers can sign up for a single shift or for multiple. 

Join Hattiesburg Parks and Recreation for free monthly senior bingo on September 24th, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM! Volunteering for bingo includes helping with setup, calling numbers, distributing cards, and supporting the event as needed. This month's program takes place at the new Katie John Dabbs Community Center in Downtown Hattiesburg located at 1102 Dabbs Street. Please arrive by 11 a.m. 

The free After School Art Class is an opportunity for kids ages 6 to 11 to explore different mediums and creative outlets. Volunteering for this program involves helping the teacher set up the classroom, helping children with art activities, and helping organize/clean the classroom. The After School Art Class is held at the Rebekah Stark Johnson Community Arts Center located at 825 North Main Street, Hattiesburg, MS 39401. Parking is available on the side of the building. Upon arrival, enter through the front of the building and the class will be in the room directly to the left. Please arrive by 3:20 p.m. When you arrive, Katie Ginn, the Arts Center Manager, will be there to greet you.

Volunteer at an outdoor sporting event for individuals with disabilities. We will need support for set, award handling, sporting officials (Offered Sports: cornhole, croquet, horseshoes, soccer skills and softball), and health volunteers for athlete support and spectators. This is the time our athletes compete to be the best and win GOLD. To hear about a Special Olympics MS event is one thing, but to actually be part of it and see it for yourself is a completely different world.

We are looking for individuals to volunteer at a local elementary school – Hawkins Elementary School located at 526 Forrest Street.  Tasks include reading to students, helping in the classroom, creating materials for the classroom, sorting library books, creating bulletin boards and other school related activities.

  *Tasks could include working with children or not working directly with children.

  *Hours are between 8am-2:30pm.

During the school year, there will be special activities that will be additional times to volunteer such as trunk or treat, celebration parades, and other school wide activities.

MS Votes will be hosting phone banking opportunities prior to the 2026 Midterm General Elections. Phone banking can be done from the comfort of your home or dorm room. MSV will offer walk-in/virtual phone banking every Tuesday and Thursday, from 2:00PM to 4:00PM. If this time does not work for you, set your time and number of hours you will commit to. Training is provided.

Interested in getting involved in the community and "knocking some doors?" MS Votes will be hosting canvassing opportunities prior to the 2026 Midterm General Elections. Put on your walking shoes and join us every Wednesday and Friday, from 10:15 AM to 12:30PM.

Option: Choose a day that works for you and grab a friend. MS Votes will provide the necessary tools for you to canvass in your community. 

Help Pink Heart Funds bring awareness and support participants during its Out of Bounds Cancer Awareness Night!

Volunteers can serve in a variety of ways, including event planning, set up and take down, photography, ticket sales, and more.

Invest in the futures of teens in the community by volunteering at Kuntry Kidz 10th Annual Career Summit. The event is a celebration of 10 years of empowering teens and building futures. Volunteers will help with check-in, handing out materials, introducing speakers, and event flow. Volunteers should be college students who are willing to bring a positive attitude and reflect the theme: You Matter. 8th-12th grade students, educators, counselors, and career coaches will be in attendance. Attire for volunteers is any college t-shirt, jeans, and comfy shoes. Volunteers are able to sign up for multiple shifts.

Volunteering at Bedford Care can take a variety of forms! Volunteers can lead a group activity such as crafts, or discussion, or music, or food-themed snacks-- you can present your own idea, or we can match you with a time and date and activity.

Volunteer times are flexible. Most activities are scheduled for 10 AM - 2 PM each day, but can be scheduled at different times when needed.

Docents are volunteer zoo educators! The Docent Program’s main goal is to help promote conservation and it is the primary theme in guest education. To achieve this goal, we use fun, educational activities to draw connections between Hattiesburg Zoo animals and Zoo guests. Docents represent the Zoo and support its promotion of conservation efforts. Docents can expect to engage with guests and educate them on the Zoo’s various animals, exhibits, biofacts, and conservation efforts. Docents will be provided with “docent boxes” with learning modules to educate guests on various science topics. While sharing information about animals, nature, and conservation, docents help increase guests’ knowledge and positive views of nature.

Aldersgate Mission is looking for volunteers willing to make a long-term & consistent commitment to the children of the Briarfield community. Meals on Wheels is a cooperative effort between CSI, local churches, and special groups to provide hot nutritious noon meals to their local church members and their friends, who are homebound and cannot provide for themselves.  We have several routes that our volunteers run Monday-Friday.  Volunteers will pick up meals from our office at 301 E 2nd St Hattiesburg, MS 39401 between 10:30-11:30.  Most of our routes have between 8-15 addresses and take approximately 1 hour for delivery.

The Burrow Nature Center is a growing grassroots nonprofit restoring 111 acres of pine savanna, running an outdoor Forest School, and teaching land management skills. We are looking for an organized, detail-oriented Grants & Fundraising Assistant to help us secure new funding streams and build our community support infrastructure.

This is an ideal role for a self-motivated student or community member interested in nonprofit management and development who wants hands-on experience building a fundraising pipeline from the ground up.

 - Grant Research & Drafting: Search for regional, corporate, and family foundation grants that align with our mission. Use our past grant templates to help draft new applications.

The Forest School at the Burrow Nature Center nurtures children's connection with nature through hands-on exploration, play-based learning, and outdoor skill development. Our program empowers children to become curious learners, problem-solvers, and stewards of the natural world.

We are looking for enthusiastic Forest School Assistants to support our outdoor classrooms. We currently serve ages 1–3 (caregiver-child classes) and ages 4–7, with plans to expand to ages 8–12 as our community grows.

What you will do:
 - Assist lead teachers in maintaining a safe, engaging outdoor environment.

 - Help children explore nature trails, participate in play-based learning, and develop outdoor skills.

The Burrow Nature Center manages 111 acres of longleaf pine savanna and sandhill habitat—a critical refuge for threatened species like the gopher tortoise and black pinesnake.

We are looking for 3 paid fellows (for underserved youth) and multiple volunteers who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and want to learn practical, sustainable land management skills.

What you will do:

 - Assist with habitat restoration projects, including tree thinning using hand tools, chainsaws, and brushcutters.

 - Prepare fire lanes and participate in prescribed burns.

 - Support our regenerative agro-forestry efforts, including setting up rotational fencing for our conservation goat herd and learning to mill logs into boards. Mushroom log cultivation and raised bed construction also included.

- Build a off-grid greenhouse (with solar power and water catchment) for our native plant nursery operation.

 - We will also have a session on small business logistics/entrepreneurship for applying skills.

Requirements:
Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and performing physically demanding tasks. Basic hand tool experience preferred.

Bellevue Assisted Living has Beauty Day for their female residents every Tuesday from 9:30-12:00 (noon). Though it may seem mundane to most, this activity is one of the highlights of their week. Office and clerical volunteers wanted at our Hattiesburg office.  Office volunteers assist with various duties around the offices including but not limited to the following: putting together admission packets, answering phones, completing "tuck in" calls, putting up stock, assisting with events, participating in meetings, and many other daily/weekly duties.  The office setting is professional yet laid back which offers an ability to learn as you go.  Office volunteers are needed for the summer and throughout the year.  Come join us!

Visit with residents in the memory care unit at Bellevue Assisted Living to help them as they work on interactive, textile activities that keep their minds engaged - activities including folding towels, coloring books, or sorting buttons, sitting with them, talking with them, listening to them, taking a walk with them, engaging them in any way that might encourage them. Volunteers are needed for one hour at a time at any time during visiting hours. Volunteers who can come regularly are requested. 

This is not a hard job, but it is one that calls for time, love and patience. That said, it is the most rewarding job you will ever have!

Special Olympics College at USM unites college students and Special Olympics athletes as teammates, leaders, and friends. Local AARP Foundation volunteers provide free tax preparation services to the Laurel/Hattiesburg community during tax season (February through mid-April).  In addition to tax preparers, we also need volunteers throughout the year to assist with website maintenance (Tax-Aide Mississippi), configure Chromebooks and routers for secure operation, and to follow-up on voicemail requests for taxpayer appointments.  Some of these activities can be performed virtually.

Training is available for all positions.

Volunteers needed to handwrite letters to senior citizens in assisted living facilities and care home! Letters Against Isolation fights senior loneliness one letter at a time. Through handwritten messages of love, hope, and joy, volunteers bring seniors connection and improves their mental and physical health.

Volunteers mail friendly handwritten letters to seniors in designated aged care facilities in Mississippi, across the US and around the world. Each message should be personal and one-of-a-kind with a greeting (“Hello, Friend!”), a bit about yourself, a thoughtful question, kind wishes, and your first name signed at the end. Avoid sensitive topics such as religion, holidays and negative feelings.

CASA volunteers are ordinary people who care about the well-being of kids. For children involved in  Family Court cases, CASA Advocates provide information to the court to help decisions to be made more promptly and with greater information and sensitivity to the child's individual needs. CASA Advocates work for better outcomes, and provide children living out of their home with the knowledge that there is a community around them who cares.

CASA Advocates come from all backgrounds. Many work full-time. Some are students, working parents, or retired people. Flexibility, rather than employment status, is the critical factor. Most CASA Advocates work on a single case at a time. No legal expertise is required.

Volunteering as a CASA in Mississippi requires:

·       a valid driver’s license

·       a successful background check

·       30 hours of initial training.

Advocates must be 21 or older, undergo a background check and a personal interview, complete the training curriculum, and agree to abide by the policies and guidelines of the local CASA program they are volunteering with. Advocates must be patient, open-minded people who have good communication skills, a history of following through on commitments, and a willingness to accept guidance. Above all, they must care about children.

Advocates have a passion and commitment to this work that is invaluable to our most vulnerable victims. CASA volunteers make a life-changing difference for children and youth. Each volunteer is trained and supported by highly-qualified staff members.

Southern Pines provides all of the supplies and medical care for our foster animals as well as ongoing training and support for all fosters. Fosters receive 1-3 volunteer hours per animal per day depending on the number of animals fostered and the type of care they require.

YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF TALENT! Just willing to give time to someone receiving hospice care. We appreciate a gifted musician, however, if you like to just play music or sing along you will still make a difference!

Music and singing bring comfort and companionship to all people but is so appreciated by those who are confined to their homes or a facility. They need you as a volunteer to provide enjoyment and a quality of life. Only an hour or two a week, or even a month, makes a difference in people’s lives.

We will train and support you every step of the way! Volunteers meet all sorts of people in hospice, and each has a story and different circumstances. You will learn so much on how to enjoy the time you spend with them!

We are always in need of volunteers so come sharpen your skills or maybe pick up some new ones all while changing the lives of people in your community. If you want to make a lasting impact on your community we have a place for you. So come lend a hand and help us out.

Gentiva Hospice is looking for compassionate hearts to serve our in our hospice administrative office (no medical work experience necessary - we will train you). With this opportunity, you will not be visiting/seeing hospice patients. Our administrative volunteers can serve in a wide array of ways such as:

Potential volunteers must complete a background check, drug screening, and a Tuberculosis Skin Test (all provided and paid for by Gentiva). We also provide training for volunteers to ensure that they are prepared for their role!

We have no set schedules or shifts. Our administrative volunteers are able to volunteer for whatever works for their schedule (within the office hours of operation). Our office operation hours are from Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. *Sometimes, assignments can be done from home and on weekends as needed.
