Volunteer: After School Recreation Volunteer

Make a positive impact in local kids' lives by joining the Hattiesburg Police Athletic League (HPALs) as a Recreation Volunteer. This role is all about building community through play! You will help foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and fun by organizing and participating in dynamic indoor and outdoor recreational activities during our after-school program. This volunteer opportunity takes place Monday through Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 3-5:30 p.m.

Key Responsibilities 

Lead and participate in casual games of basketball, football, and other physical activities to keep students energized and engaged.Facilitate and play board games, card games, and collaborative indoor activities to foster strategic thinking and friendly interaction.Encourage good sportsmanship, fair play, and healthy social habits among participants while acting as a supportive, approachable mentor.Help maintain a safe, welcoming, and upbeat environment where kids of all skill levels feel included and motivated to join in.Work alongside HPAL staff to manage game equipment, help set up designated play areas, and ensure smooth transitions between activities.

Volunteers will need to show up by 4 p.m. to the Ben McNair Recreation Center located at 300 North 12th Avenue. Upon arrival volunteers will be greeted by a member of the HPAL staff for a brief orientation and will then be directed to the gym.

Make a lasting impact on a student’s academic journey by serving as an After-School Homework Assistant and Tutor. You will work directly with elementary school students to build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and foster a lifelong love for learning in a supportive, positive environment.

Key Responsibilities 

Help students complete daily homework assignments across core subjects (Math, Science, Reading, and Social Studies) while ensuring they understand underlying concepts rather than just finding the correct answers.Assist students with reading comprehension, foundational math, and writing to help bridge learning gaps and boost classroom performance.Teach foundational organizational habits, effective time management, test-preparation strategies, and note-taking techniques to promote independent learning.Serve as a positive role model by actively listening, offering constructive feedback, celebrating academic wins, and helping students cultivate a growth mindset.Assist program staff with organizing educational games, setting up learning stations, and maintaining a focused, safe, and productive study space.
