Who We Are
Lake Thoreau Environmental Center is the University of Southern Mississippi’s vibrant nature center, nestled just a few miles west of campus and connected via the Longleaf Trace rail-trail. Spanning over 290 acres, this living “museum” is guided by core principles of education, research, recreation, and conservation—creating a sanctuary where the public, students, and researchers alike can connect with and learn from the natural world.
What We Do
At Lake Thoreau, we foster a deep appreciation of nature through immersive and hands-on experiences. Our missioninvites visitors of all ages to explore their relationship with the natural world and champion the protection and stewardship of longleaf pine ecosystems. We offer a range of recreational activities—including fishing, mountain biking, hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing—designed to engage the community in meaningful, healthy outdoor experiences.
